Why have a dress code?

The importance of implementing a dress code for our dance classes has many factors. For starters, it presents a professional environment when all of the dancers look uniform. Secondly, in order for us to properly correct posture, technique and form, the dancer must be in form fitting clothing so that we can see what we are correcting. Dance apparel is designed to allow the body to move and stretch in ways that regular clothing cannot accommodate. Also, the clothing children come to class in can be a distraction for them, especially with the younger dancers when they come into class with too many layers on. Hair can also become a distraction if it’s constantly falling down or in the dancer’s face. Please make sure to secure your child’s hair neatly into a ponytail or bun, or by using clips to keep it off the face. As well, having the appropriate footwear is essential for learning how to dance properly. You wouldn’t send a hockey player out onto the ice in running shoes. Lastly, dressing like a dancer teaches the children about discipline and taking pride in their appearance. This prepares them for dressing the part on-stage later in the year. If you have any questions about your child’s dance attire, please do not hesitate to ask us.
